Gallagher Council was founded in 1925 through the efforts of over 80 gentlemen who attended St. Mary Parish in Royal Oak. It is named after Bishop Michael J. Gallagher, born November 18, 1866 in Auburn, Michigan (north of Saginaw). He was ordained a priest on March 19, 1893 in the Diocese of Grand Rapids. He went on to become the second Bishop of Grand Rapids and was installed at St. Andrew's Cathedral in Grand Rapids on December 26, 1915. He was then installed as fifth Bishop of Detroit at St. Partick's Cathedral on November 18, 1918. Bishop Gallagher died on January 20, 1937. After more than 80 years, Bishop Gallagher Council continues to provide programs to enhance the parish communities of St. Mary and St. James Parishes. Our newsletter, "The Prompter" details the activities of the council and informs the membership and the public of our goings on. |
